I spent the first decade of my career glibly plodding along as a “public relations professional.” Then I joined an “integrated MarCom agency” and my whole world changed. I resisted and dug in. I snickered and bickered. Finally, I just let go and embraced “integration.” Soon enough I saw through the clutter . . . PR, advertising, marketing, traditional media, Web site, social media, out-of-home, point-of-sale, word-of-mouth. I saw the simple, beautiful truth . . . it is all “just” media and you need it all to truly communicate effectively. Since that realization my breakfast tastes better, my glasses are less smudgy, my brain runs faster, my creative briefs read better, my strategies are tighter, my goals are more objective and I’m a better professional (provider) and person (consumer).
